Team lead

A volunteer who owns a whole department rather than a single shift inside it. The team lead recruits for their own area, fills their own part of the shift plan, briefs their own people, and brings the organizer the gaps rather than the details. It is the structural step between a roster one person holds and a team that can carry an event bigger than the last one, and it is also the main retention mechanism, because people come back for responsibility that was genuinely theirs rather than for free entry. Filmmakers Connect already runs this way: the volunteer team is organized into departments that build their own culture and profile their own seniors.

Ticket Fairy’s guide to scaling fan conventions describes the shift “from an informal volunteer group to a hierarchy of departments with trained team leads” as the change scale forces on organizers. Meetup’s leadership documentation shows the same idea at the smaller end, with organizer, co-organizer, assistant organizer and event organizer tiers each carrying real permissions. A Whova volunteer panel describes long-serving volunteers naturally taking “that lead or captain role” over an area they know well.
