Producer
The function that owns the show: the run of show, the audio and video, the stage, and the capture (recording, livestream, cameras). The producer made the plan, so the producer owns escalations while the plan is being performed. The role becomes necessary the moment a program has cues, meaning walk-on music, a video roll, a mic swap, a recording that has to start and stop cleanly. Someone has to run those from off stage, and it cannot be the person on the mic. At production scale the job divides further into a producer who made the plan, a stage manager who gets presenters ready and in position, and a show caller who says when each thing happens.
Source: The TEDx Organizer Guide’s executive producer, who “will lead all production and planning for the day of the event” and oversees “content production, stage management, technology, and video.” The three-way split at larger scale is documented by MeyerPro: “The producer makes the plan, the stage manager gets the presenters ready, and the show caller says when everything happens.”
