Activation

The sponsor actually doing something at the event, beyond a logo on a banner. Interactive booths, product demos people can get their hands on, branded photo moments, gamified stations, a walkthrough experience. Activation is what a top-tier sponsor is really buying, and designing the slots for it (which booth spots, which stage moments, which photo moments) is the organizer’s job, not the brand’s. The balance to hold is that an activation should produce genuine value for the sponsor without hijacking the reason people came. At Filmmakers Connect scale, the sponsor booths at the August event are activation slots, and so is anything a brand can hand a filmmaker to try.

Source: The term is standard experiential-marketing vocabulary. Published examples of the form range from interactive booths and product demos to gamified stations, such as a hoop-shot booth that converts baskets into charity donations (Skift Meetings, experiential marketing examples; Events.com, brand activation ideas). Practitioners on the Whova sponsorship panel describe activations as a distinct and coveted package element alongside booth space, naming pop-ups during sessions as a way to keep an exhibit floor fresh (Event Insider 36).
